PM Modi inaugurates new units in Koradi thermal power station
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated various units of thermal power plants at Koradi, Chandrapur and Parli with a total capacity of 3,230 Mega Watts. These include three super-critical units 660 MW each at Koradi, two of 500 MW each at Chandrapur and one of 250 MW at Parli. The Prime Minister also released two special commemorative postal stamps – one depicting Deekshabhoomi in its full glory and the other with twin pictures of Lord Gautam Buddha and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar at another function in the city.

22-year-old HIV positive model crowned Miss Congo UK 2017
Horcelie Sinda Wa Mbongo who was diagnosed with HIV-positive at the age of 11 won the 2017 edition of the Miss Congo UK beauty pageant. The grand finale was held at the Stratford Town Hall. The gorgeous lady hails from the Democratic Republic of Congo, but is presently studying for in London, pursuing a Fine Arts degree. Post her magnificent win at the pageant she has plans to return to Congo, and help promote campaigns on HIV and AIDS, with a youth-led group called Youth Stop AIDS, which campaigns “for a world without AIDS.

Mahavir Phogat awarded FICCI’s gender parity award
Mahavir Singh Phogat, a real life hero and father of wrestler Geeta Phoghat, along with Apollo Hospital founder Prathap C Reddy, bagged Ficci’s gender parity award for their contribution in harnessing the talents of their daughters. Phogat was accompanied by his Commonwealth Games gold medal winner daughter Geeta at the event that marked the launch of the country’s first gender parity index by Ficci’s Ladies Organisation (FLO), which will  gauge how women fare in a male dominated corporate sector of India.

Prakash Jvadekar to Launch Own Portal and Mobile App of RUSA
The Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), under the aegis of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, is going to launch its own portal and mobile app on April 17, 2017 by Union HRD Minister Shri. Prakash Javadekar in New Delhi.  The portal is a one-stop for States’ Higher Education Plans, decision of the States’ Higher Education Councils and details of the resources under this scheme. Also, the gallery is a rich repository of the projects initiated under RUSA.

March 2017 was the second hottest March ever recorded: NASA

Last month was the second warmest March in 137 years of modern record-keeping, according to a monthly analysis of global temperatures by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
Last month was 1.12 degrees Celsius warmer than the mean March temperature from 1951-1980. The two top March temperature anomalies have occurred during the past two years.
March 2016 was the hottest on record, at 1.27 degrees Celsius warmer than the March mean temperature. March 2017’s temperature was 0.15 degrees Celsius cooler than March 2016, but 0.2 degrees Celsius warmer than any previous March.

Sai Praneeth wins Singapore open Badminton
Indian shuttler B Sai Praneeth clinched his maiden Super Series title at the Singapore Open after defeating compatriot K Srikanth in a historic all-Indian final. World No.30 Praneeth, who had won the Canada Open Grand Prix last year and reached the Syed Modi Grand Prix Gold final this year, outmaneuvered Srikanth 17-21, 21-17, 21-12 in the summit clash of the $350,000 event. It was the first time in the history of international badminton that two Indians were playing a Super Series final and it turned out to be a thrilling contest.

Pullela Gopichand’s daughter wins 2 titles at Jr Grand Prix

National badminton coach Pullela Gopichand’s daughter Gayatri Pullela has bagged both the singles and doubles crown at the Pembangunan Jaya Raya Junior Grand Prix in Jakarta. Both Gayatri and Samiya train together at the Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad. Gayatri eked out a hard-fought 21-11 18-21 21-16 win over her doubles partner Samiya Farooqui to win the girls U-15 singles title. Gayatri later teamed up with Samiya to clinch the U-15 doubles title with a straight game 21-17 21-15 win over Indonesian pair of Kelly Larissa and Shelandry Vyola.

World’s oldest person Emma Morano dies aged 117

Emma Morano, who at 117 was believed to be the world’s oldest person and the last surviving child of the 19th century, died. Morano, who lived 117 years and 137 days, was born on Nov. 29, 1899, four years before the Wright brothers first took to the air. Her life spanned three centuries, two World Wars and more than 90 Italian governments.

Former J&K Governor Girish Saxena dies

Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Girish Chandra Saxena, whose tenure saw a significant decline of militancy in the Valley, died. He was 90. The funeral pyre of Saxena, who served as the governor of the troubled state twice, was lit by his grandson Varun in the presence of political leaders and senior bureaucrats, including National Security Advisor A K Doval.

Panama national football team player shot dead
International football player Amilcar Henriquez has been shot and killed in the country’s Colon province. Henriquez was a member of Panama’s national team which is participating in eliminator rounds for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. He was 33.
